Time to Renew
Written by David Cady
Wednesday, 25 January 2012

Membership renewals have been mailed. If you were a member last year should have received your renewal form with pre-printed information filling in most of the blanks.

Keep in mind that March 1 is the "on time" deadline for renewals at the standard rate. Anything later will result in a significant additional fee and will complicate setting up the fleets. (As much as we'd appreciate the extra funds for our bank account, we'd rather you got your renewal in by the deadline.)

If you have misplaced the renewal that was mailed to you, or if you are a potential new member, you can download a blank membership form by clicking here.

The Cruising Alternative
Written by Bob Adler
Friday, 20 January 2012

Attention: Buffalo Harbor Sailing Club sailors who are interested in cruising their boats more this summer. Every year I hear the same story at the end of the sailing season: “I wish I would have cruised more this past summer”. And each year I usually respond, “you should have joined us – we went to Port Colborne, Dunnville, Port Dover, Erie, and Dunkirk for a week (or two).”

One year we took a month to gunk hole from Buffalo to Pelee Island Ontario and back. Another year we circumnavigated Lake Ontario. We have a sloop rigged Seafarer 30 named Serendipity that we never race but equip for comfort, for simple sail handling and for passage making. I love finding people in ports to talk to about their boats or their town – I once met an elderly gentleman in his 90s sitting on a park bench in Ohio who made Sitka Spruce masts for boats all over the United States – he was the previous owner of the marina where I was staying. Most interesting stories and amazing people.

We also love anchoring out under a bluff in Long Point bay or beachcombing on the point and having a barbecue
onboard.

I am willing to put together one or two group cruises this summer (two or more boats who want to go cruising for up to a week or more) in Lake Erie. I’m willing to organize a meeting with BHSC members and others who might want to make a commitment to planning nice group of boats that want to do a cruising trip.
